| Personal History | The eldest of three siblings Sam was born and raised on the family farm on Earth. He used to spend many nights with his two sisters staring up at the stars and planning their futures, there was never any real doubt that they'd end up in Starfleet. Sam's time at the Academy was spent focusing on the security track in the main, but he displayed a significant prowess in investigative technique that following graduation he was assigned to the USS Shieldmaiden as a security officer, the Shieldmaiden's assignment was counter intelligence operations with the rise of the Tal'Shiar controlled 'Romulan Empire' there was a real concern in Starfleet that the Federation was vulnerable to the machinations of its most persistent rival. Two years after being assigned to the Shieldmaiden Sam was pulled from active duty and placed on what he still regards as his toughest assignment - he was placed on a classified undercover operation on Starbase 84, his mission to investigate suspicions around the bases command staff. To accomplish this he had been given a promotion to Lieutenant, a false identity and the position of chief of security. It was the sort of long term assignment that he was trained for but there are always unexpected variables and in this instance that was a fresh faced ensign by the name of Felix Kennedy. Over the course of the years long assignment Sam fell in love with and married Felix - the ceremony was deliberately held on Risa and included a briefing that Sam will probably never be forgiven for. The marriage may have been seen as a complication by some but it proved instrumental in bringing both the CO and XO of Starbase 84 to court martial for dealings with the Orion Crime Syndicate and the Tal'Shiar, this culminated with a skirmish in the Nequencia system. Following the end of the undercover assignment Sam's next assignment came with a further promotion to the rank of Commander - he was assigned as First Officer aboard the USS Renee Picard and now his career focus shifted as he found himself more directly dealing not only with enemies outside but also inside the Federation, the inability to completely trust what the orders were wasn't helpful as far as he was concerned and when his CO Captain Ramsey was taken hostage aboard the USS Montana while negotiating a potential path for the Romulan colonies towards Federation membership Sam took decisive action, pursuing and capturing the Montana, fending off an attack by the Tal'Shiar and rescuing those taken, sadly his captain was killed in the battle. Sam was subsequently promoted to the rank of Captain and continued to keep a watch over the Romulan colonies. When war broke out Sam was promoted further up into the admiralty and given charge of trying to counter the aggression in the area, opting to do so from the bridge of the Renee Picard than a starbase. Following the Synthulan attack against the Federation he assumes the mantle of Director of Starfleet security. |
