Mission: A New Beginning
On:
Over the past four months Marius couldn't help but marvel at the speed in which this area of the Delta Quadrant had evolved. Ocampa V, no longer the vast desert landscape was now a rich environment filled with rich vegetation and wildlife. The Ocampa were grateful, and while most had chosen to leave and settle on the northern continent now called Korrathis, several had chosen to remain and work alongside the Federation. While it would be some time until a formal Academy was established, they were being trained by decorated Starfleet Officers and would be valuable assets.
President T'Kes was now residing over a newly constructed Federation Headquarters that was built on one of the lower continents, and while the Admirals still had quarters on the Obsidian, most found themselves planetside a majority of the time. There was still much to be done, but there was enough present to matter. The Delta Quadrant was still an unknown, and they had work to be done.
Their ranks were growing as well. Over the past four months, survivors of the Synthulan attacks had begun to trickle in, take shelter and recover. Pontmercy had visited with many of them, hoping for news- but for now he didn't know much more than when they had first left the Alpha Quadrant. For the time being he was content that the word was getting out there that a new Federation was being established, and a refuge for all who wanted it was waiting for them.
The survivors that they had rescued before the seeding of Ocampa V had recovered, but not one of them could describe what had attacked their vessels. All told there were 644 beings that they had managed to save, and he counted that a victory at a time in which there were precious few. Many of them had chosen to start new lives on the planet below, starting an economy in a world that would desperately need it. 182 of them had chosen to join Starfleet, a relief to be sure. He had spoken with both his Marines and Security forces, ensuring that their departments would see a majority of these new transfers, along with doctors, scientists, and various other specialties.
The crew of the Obsidian had seen proof that their mission, with all of its horrors and pain, still had life and purpose. There was a sense of relief and even healing that was visible in many small ways. Laughter was heard in the corridors and on the promenade again, and that was something he hadn't known he had been missing. Not everything was as it was- but it shouldn't be. But for now, there was hope... and that hope was something they could all cling to.
